At United Way Southern Vancouver Island, we have seen many changes in our community due to the pandemic.
Not all COVID stories are the same. People have experienced job loss and food insecurity. Many individuals have lost their homes or are at risk of losing their shelter. The demand for mental health services has skyrocketed. There has been a tragic increase in the number of people who are dying from accidental overdoses. More families are on the edge of poverty. Stress is high.
There are, however, many things in our community that have not changed. Our care and compassion for one another. Our love for everything local. Our sense of community – neighbours helping neighbours.
Because we love #YYJ, from Victoria to Sooke to Sidney and the Southern Gulf Islands, we will rally. We continue to rally our energy, time and talents, and where we can, our dollars to serve our community.
For this year’s annual campaign season, we have four areas of action, each with signature initiatives wherein individuals can direct gifts to help those most vulnerable.
You can help connect isolated seniors to healthy meals and companionship.
You can help families succeed by providing neighbourhood resources close to home.
You can help build a safe space for children.
You can help create a welcoming, inclusive and equitable community for all.
You can help provide counselling, outreach and peer support services for those facing mental health challenges and addictions.
UWSVI was here for #YYJ before COVID-19 and will continue to be here long into the future as we recover: uniting local people for local good.
