Greater Victoria is a wonderful place to call home. However, our community faces important social issues that often go unnoticed – issues that impact the lives of far too many. Unfortunately, these issues don’t go away by simply ignoring them. The people struggling every day live amongst us.

Meet AJ.

When he was a young boy, he was diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). That led to other diagnoses, including anxiety and depression.

AJ’s illness made it difficult to get along with his family. He left home. He dropped out of school. He contemplated suicide. By the time he was 18, he was homeless, with no money and no education.

AJ got help through a United Way funded program that reconnected him to programs and services including counselling, housing, peer support and skill development. Now he volunteers with youth as a peer support worker.

AJ is just one of more than 80,000 lives changed this past year through United Way.
