Mental Health & Addictions
Assisting people facing mental health and/or addictions challenges and their families access counselling services, outreach, and peer support.
Good mental health and wellness help us enjoy our life and the people in it. Individuals struggling with mental health and/or addiction issues can experience fear, rejection, relationship and family breakdown, job loss, inability to finish their education, and stigma that severely impacts their quality of life and that of their loved ones.
Victoria and Southern Vancouver Island, in general, have a high rate of mental health issues as well as one of the highest overdose rates in the province. The opioid epidemic is affecting people from all walks of life and all socio-economic backgrounds; it could be your friend, your family member, your co-worker, or your next-door neighbour.
Many people struggle with mental health challenges and/or addiction, but it can be hard to talk about it. Too often, stigma gets in the way of asking for help.
UWSVI works with social service organizations on community-based initiatives focused on mental health and addiction education, awareness, prevention, and early intervention. Together, we’re creating more inclusive communities and ensuring those impacted by mental health and addiction issues can easily access the supports they need without stigma and before challenges become deep-rooted.
