Periods are a fact of life

May 26, 2022 / by United Way

Period poverty is much more common in our community than you would think. Half of all people who menstruate say that they have struggled to purchase products for themselves at some time in their life, and more than a quarter have gone through a period without having any products to support them.

United Way’s Period Promise, and your support can help change that. We are asking you to help United Way Southern Vancouver Island fill a BC Transit bus with unopened boxes of tampons, pads and other menstrual hygiene products to help those in need. We are launching our initiative this year on May 28, International Menstrual Hygiene Day. The initiative will run from May 28 to June 25, 2022, and we would like to work with your company and cross-promote Period Promise to your patrons and employees.

WHAT:             Period Promise: Fill the bus
WHEN:             June 25, 2022, between 10 am and 3 pm, at Tillicum Mall

Last year, over 20 organizations received menstrual hygiene products, from shelters to refugee and Indigenous-serving agencies on Southern Vancouver Island.

Many of our supporters host employee, stores, and patrons drives leading up to our Fill the Bus event, and we’d love to have your organizations participate as well.

We provide a toolkit that has everything necessary to host a menstrual product drive in your workplace: posters, templates, and methods to donate both in person and through online donation, allowing for accessible, flexible participation for everyone wishing to participate in your campaign!

Donations can be brought to the United Way Southern Vancouver Island office at 201-633 Courtney Street Monday to Friday, from 9am to 4pm , OR you can bring them down to our Fill the Bus event on Saturday, June 25. Products collected will be distributed to United Way-funded agencies. Cash donations can be made at
